[Writing] Sudden Stories...

Add to Memories Share
Scribbles
Yesterday, I had a story idea occur to me in a single 'blob.'

It was a combination of two words I had written in my story idea notebook -- and could no longer remember why -- and a song that Charles de Lint performed on Sunday. It's different than my usual style, and shorter, and yet it all came together all at once. I wrote it down at lunch, and typed it up after work.

In some ways, those are the most rewarding stories; where they come to you so clearly you have to write them down, and do so in a single sitting.

Now, of course, I have to figure out how much tinkering to do with it, and where to submit it...

[Workshop] Waiting for Clarion...

So, it's the beginning of May, and still no word from Clarion West. I gather that accepted folks got a phone call, while those who were not accepted got the rejection as a snail-mail letter. Given that they said that all applicants would be contacted by the end of April, and given that I see lots of folks posting on the Clarion West forums about receiving their acceptance, I suspect it's safe to assume that I'm not making the cut.

Not that I really expected to make it, but still a little disappointing. Ah, well. Now just to await the letter as final confirmation. :)

[Workshop] Clarion West...

God help me, I've just submitted my application packet to the Clarion West workshop for 2006.

I have no clue how I would manage six weeks off from work if they accept me. Granted, I don't expect them to accept me. Still, there are some really good instructors this year... the lineup is Paul Park, Maureen McHugh, Ian R. MacLeod (who writes steampunk!), Nalo Hopkinson, Ellen Datlow, and Vernor Vinge.

Ian R. MacLeod is, I admit, half the reason I would actually really like to go this year. He's one of the few who writes something akin to some of the stuff I really enjoy writing, with weird steampunk fusion settings and all.

Ulp.

Now to wait for the rejection letter!

Clockwork Tiger Redux

Well, The Clockwork Tiger came back with a rejection from F&SF. I tweaked it a little bit, and then promptly sent it out to another magazine.

After that, however, I decided to run it through my two writing groups. It did two passes through the Tuesday night writing group, with some pacing changes and a few more tweaks.

Today, it ran through Writer's Cramp; I was afraid there would be tons of flaws, but folks actually relatively liked it. However, as a result of the discussion, I came up a few more significant changes to the story -- including a different ending -- and rewrote it tonight.

I'm fairly happy with how it came out, but alas, the previous revision is already out at a place that probably won't get around to rejecting it for another 60 days. Le sigh!

Random Snippet...

The very beginning of a little story that has been randomly filling itself out in my head...

If you happened to visit Llwnffylch village in Wales and asked anyone about Benedigeidfram Dyfnallt, they'd tell you that young Bennie was the mole-catcher's apprentice and quite a deft hand with the spade. Outside of Llwnffylch, you'd hear that Ben Devonald was one of the greatest adventurers of the Empire and the hero in dozens of stories that every schoolboy could recite by heart.

Both are true, of course.

Not that Bennie particularly wanted to be a hero, mind you; he was perfectly happy catching moles in the gardens of Llwnffylch. But the world had a habit of dropping adventure right in front of him. Take, for instance, the entire affair with the clockwork knight.

Bennie had only just returned home from dealing with the ice dragons of the South Pole, and now he was settling in to deal with far more important matters. Moles had tunneled beneath Eira Hamer's garden, eating the roots of her prize-winning vegetables. Removing them without doing more damage to old Eira's crops would be a delicate task. Bennie was just putting the final touches on the plans for a highly specialized mole-extraction device -- consisting of a wheelbarrow, two jars of marmalade, a pair of trousers and a tame dormouse named Daffyd -- when someone knocked insistently on his door.

...okay, yes, it's perhaps a little odd.

Characters who ask for roles...

I had a character pop up in my head out of nowhere today, demanding a story about him. Yet I'm not quite certain what to do with him yet.

His name is Benedigeidfram Dyfnallt. (He goes by "Ben." Understandably, I think.) He is a young apprentice mole-catcher from the Welsh village of Llwnffylch, and I think he's going to be a reluctant adventurer.

Hrm...

Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock...

So, I went and sent Clockwork Tiger off today. I decided that if I kept tinkering with it, eventually I'd go past 'polishing' and it would start to lose some of whatever charm it has. Best to at least get it out there and see what happens.

And I figured, "Why not aim high?" So I sent it to F&SF. At least they'll reject it quickly, right? Already thinking on where to submit it next when I get the inevitable slip from 'slushpile king' JJA.

Now... to do another attempt at a short story, or keep on with polishing/revising the later chapters of The Last Page. Hrm...

As a side note, now that I've sent it off and cannot neurotically edit it to pieces, if any of my friends is curious enough to want to read Clockwork Tiger go ahead and drop me a note.

Clockwork Tiger

In non-website-news, I did finish up what I think is the final draft of Clockwork Tiger, a short story set in my old Of Spells and Steam world. It's kind of dark, but has a few good bits to it.

Two snippets... )

It's short (under 2000 words) and kind of dialogue-heavy, but everyone who has read it seems to like it. I'd hoped to take it to one of my two writing groups tonight to be looked at, but alas, the group session got canceled. I may still seek a few proofreaders out to give a real good once-over, before I submit it anywhere.

For now, though... sleep.

Well, Desktop of an Aspiring Writer is finally up in a preliminary form. I'm not entirely sure about the design yet, but since the entire website is done in CSS, I can change it easily. I was quite fond of the dark blues-y look when I was prototyping the whole thing, and now it looks somehow too dark and blobby. Ah, well.

There's still a lot of content missing, and I probably need to redo the links to include this blog, but at least I have a sort of virtual desktop now! And I did include a very rough write-up of Ex Libris as well. And unlike my Livejournal, the website works quite well in Safari (and even looks slightly better in it).

And Lo, A Journal Appears...

And now I have a writing journal. Tada. I will make an actual post a bit later, no doubt.

Edit: I see that the journal does not work well in Safari. I will attempt to fix that later. Argh.
